Project Description

When I was told I could develop a brand and layout for a magazine about anything I want, I immediately thought about food. Actually,
I always think about food. But this time I wanted to focus on the experience of eating with your hands on a busy sidewalk, so
"street food" became the focus of my project.

The Menu

The table of contents developed as the magazine took shape. As more personality came through each article, it reflected here in this spread, until a menu design became the driving force for it's layout.

The feature article is purposefully accentuated on the right page using it's unique visual language.

Departments

The Scoop

The first of three departments:
sections dedicated to a repeated category of article. An assigned color, icon, and witty name indicates which department the reader is looking at.

As shown below, the first iteration
starts as a basic layout of type and image. After more consideration for visual language, the next iteration is made more consistent with the rest of the magazine.

Street Chefs

Street Chefs

This department is dedicated to reader and chef recipes for homemade street food.

The first iterations feature recipes
that are more high-class, but don't
fit among the napkin served meals that qualify as street food in this publication. For that reason, this spread was aimed at highlighting outdoor cooking and eating.

Big City Bites

This department features a different US city in each issue, along with local events.

The schedule view on the far left can theoretically be customized to the subscriber's city as an insert.

Right page depicts an example for social media promotion.

Feature Article

Feature Article

Winner Winner, Michelin Dinner

The feature has a unique visual language but ties in with the whole

magazine. The icon used for this segment is the Michelin Star and the official Michelin red is used in graphic elements.

The original story was so fascinating that this layout basically designed itself. The serif title font and dynamic composition is elegant, contrasting
the tone of low-brow street food.
